A pendulum is made of a weight or item, preferably symmetrical and ending with a point, often made from crystal, metal or wood, on the end of a chain varying in length usually between 4 to 10 inches. The weight on the end of the chain should not be too light nor too heavy, some recommend that the weight should weigh less than half an ounce.
They have been used to divine the sex of unborn babies, to find lost items, to communicate with your higher self, to communicate with guardian angels or spirit guides, to divine guidance and to speak with spirits. They are thought to be very accurate when used correctly and some use pendulums to help them make decisions either through the guidance from their guides or their own higher self. Some also use them for Feng Shui, using them to dowse ‘hidden energy sources’ such as underwater streams or rivers, ‘energy grids’, ‘earth energy lines’ or Ley Lines.
Crystal pendulums are among the most popular choice of material but it is recommended that these are cleansed regularly, usually by leaving them in light of a full moon.
Pendulums can be bought online, although many prefer to buy them in person and choose one that feels right to them, that they feel a connection to. Pendulums can also be made using a pendant or charm, preferably crystal, particularly any crystal or other stone which is symmetrical and equal on all sides. You can then attach this as a weight to the end of a chain or cord.
PENDULUM MATERIALS AND THEIR PROPERTIES
Semi-precious stones are favourites for pendulum weights as they are believed to contain energy and have their own specific energies depending on the gemstone type. Some believe that some crystal pendulums have stronger swings, and give clearer answers, than others due to this energy.
Citrine is a yellow stone thought to be a healing crystal, and therefore good to use when divining matters of health, dowsing food allergies, as well as being a stone that brings happiness, ‘improves the mind’ and helps fight addiction. The stone was also treasured by the Ancient Greeks and is thought to be best used in home Feng Shui for knowledge, family and health.
Rose quartz is thought to have a positive, friendly, peaceful and loving energy, as well as restore trust and harmony. Some also use rose quartz as a healing stone, to lower stress or to clear angry or resentful energies.
Clear quartz is known for clarity and thought to amplify energy and intention as well as protection and healing. Clear quartz is also thought to absorb energy more easily than other stones so it is recommended that they be cleansed more frequently.
Smoky quartz is believed to neutralize negative vibrations, disperse fear, lift depression, relieve stress and anxiety and calm emotions.
Amethyst is a semi-precious crystal which is believed to enhance spiritual energies, be useful during meditation and offer protection. Amethyst is also believed to have healing powers both for physical and emotional ailments as well as having use in chakra balancing, particularly the crown chakra. Amethyst is also thought to help with nightmares and insomnia.
Lapis Lazuli is used for mental clarity and is believed to improve self-awareness and express, honesty and morality and help reveal inner truths. The stone is also thought to stimulate objectivity and creativity and inspire confidence.
Black tourmaline is thought to be a powerful stone when seeking protections against negative energy as well as psychic and EMF protection as well as being a strong spiritual grounding stone.
Opalite is used to remove energy blockages and is believed to improve communication on all levels and assist in emotional transitions. It is also thought to help give people strength to verbalize their inner feelings.
Labradorite is thought to be a stone of transformation and can be used to help someone through change, imparting strength and perseverance. Some believe that it protects and balances your aura and raises consciousness of spiritual energies and increases intuition and psychic abilities.
Turquoise is one of the oldest semi-precious stones as it is believed to have been valued as a stone as early as 4,000 BC. the stone is believed to bring good health, wealth, family, and improve careers.
Amber was highly valued by ancient Greeks and Romans and is believed to bring luck, wealth, and have healing energies.
Orgonite made from several different kinds of gemstones and metals set in resin and is believed to improve energy circulation and create a source of power. The properties of Orgonite will vary and change depending on the materials used.
Jade is thought to be a stone which brings prosperity and luck, and to be a symbol of serenity and purity. The stone is also believed to also bring wisdom and increase love and nurturing as well as protecting from harm.
Agate can be found in a wide variety of colours and patterns and has historically been used as a talisman for power and to relieve stress and tension.
Jasper is predominantly red but can also have elements of yellow, brown, white and hematite. The stone is believed to be useful in dowsing, divination and healing as well as balancing yin and yang energies.
Use of emerald as a talisman supposedly dates back to 2,000 BC and has been used for healing and protection against enemies.
Garnet can be found in most commonly and popularly in hues of pink, red and brown is thought to help balance energies and enhance romance.
Hematite was commonly used by ancient Egyptians for ornaments in tombs. The stone is thought to bring protection, balance and to help with grounding.
Some varieties of Sodalite have been known to be sensitive to UV light which may cause the colours in the stone to change or fade. It is believed to be a stone of wisdom, a calming stone, and is thought to help analyse situations and make decisions.
Metal pendulums are usually made from stainless steel, chrome, copper or silver. Silver and copper however are thought to be the most conduction of energies and some of the more popular material choices for metallic pendulums. They are also thought to be ideal for pendulum readings as pendulums use energy a lot and the magnetic energies they have are thought to generate stronger swings and therefore clearer answers.
Wooden pendulums are visually attractive and often hand-carved but are not believed to hold as much energy as crystal or metal and therefore have a weaker swing and less clear answers.
CHAMBERED OR CAGED PENDULUMS
Some pendulums are chambered or caged, usually with a lid of some kind so that you can put an item inside the chamber or cage such as a piece of paper, some herbs, crystals or tissue or a lava stone soaked with oil etc. A piece of paper with your thought of intentions written on it, inserted into the pendulum cage or chamber is believed to help you stay focused and to keep the reading focused.
Pendulums come in three main shapes: hexagon, wand, teardrop and sephoroton.
Teardrop pendulums are shaped similar to a water droplet and swing easily, and are therefore thought to be good for beginners, but are not thought to be as accurate as pendulums that come to a point at the bottom.
Hexagonally shaped pendulums are recognisable as one of the most common types of pendulums and are thought to be good for healing and detecting sensitive areas of the body. The hexagon shape is thought to help find balance, union and harmony. The hexagonal pendulum comes in shorter length, with a similar height and width, pendulums and more elongated shaped pendulums that come to a sharper point
Wand shaped pendulums are very similar to crystal wands only much smaller and shorter in length. These pendulums will be shaped the same on both ends and are usually only used for crystal pendulums.
Sephoroton pendulums have ‘a gemstone sphere, with a metal tip’ and are thought to be very precise and accurate due to having high sensitivity to vibrations and is also thought to be especially useful when asking questions relating to love or money.
HOW TO CLEANSE A PENDULUM
Cleansing a pendulum is believed to be important to cleanse it of a build of energies or negative energies, crystals especially are thought to absorb surrounding energies. This may be necessary if the responses from your pendulum are ‘erratic’ or ‘sluggish’.
You can cleanse your pendulum by leaving it sunlight (do not leave crystals unattended in sunlight as the focused light can cause fires) or overnight in the night from a full moon, you can hold it under running water and visualise its energy being cleansed (this is not appropriate for some pendulums such as those made from wood or certain crystals which can be damaged by water and you should dry your pendulum after), some people prefer to use cleansing salt water, or you can burn cleansing herbs or incense and blow the smoke over your pendulum or hold your pendulum in the incense smoke (be careful if your pendulum is wooden).
Or, some people like to simply hold their pendulum in their hand, or place it in front of them, and visualise ‘beautiful, cleansing, healing white light or golden light surrounding the stone and washing through it making it fresh and clean’.
You may also want to ‘recharge’ your pendulum with your energy, or positive energy, after cleansing it.
HOW TO USE A PENDULUM
Some recommend that beginners start with a pendulum with a shorter chain as longer chains require more energy to swing and move the pendulum. Also recommended for beginners, and those who are not having success with pendulum dowsing, is beginning with the pendulum already in motion instead of stationary.
The first thing you need to do is find out how your pendulum moves for ‘yes’ and ‘no’ by asking ‘please show me [yes/no/maybe etc.]’. Everyone and every pendulum are different so everyone will get different movements for your responses. You may also want to find out how your pendulum moves for ‘maybe’ and ‘don’t know’ or ‘can’t say’/’won’t say’. If your pendulum does not move then you have not gotten a response and you may want to try again another time.
Hold the end of your pendulum chain, you may want to use your ‘dominant’ hand, usually there is a bead or a ring at the end for you to hold, try to keep your hand and arm still and focus your mind and energy on the end of your pendulum and allow it to swing freely. Ask your pendulum ‘please show me yes’ and wait to see how your pendulum moves to show you what a ‘yes’ response looks like. This could be a clockwise or counter-clockwise circle, back to front, side to side or diagonally. You then need to do the same with ‘no’, ‘maybe’ etc.
You may want to do this each time you use your pendulum, at least at the beginning, as the responses may not always be the same but you may also find after a while, as many people do, that the movement your pendulum makes for the responses stay the same or at least similar.
You can also choose to use a pendulum chart which you can buy, or you can make your own.
Next, it is best to ask your pendulum some test questions that you know the answer to so that you can determine if your pendulum is working and responding clearly, such as ‘is my name [your name]’, ‘am I [age] years old’, ‘do I live in…’ etc.
Then you are ready to begin using your pendulum to divine answers to your questions.
It is also important to choose an appropriate time and place to work with your pendulum. It’s best to pick a time and place where you feel comfortable and where you will be undisturbed. You also want to choose a time when you feel positive, are in the right mindframe, not feeling stressed, depressed, over-tired or unwell as you will be more vulnerable. It’s best to remain present, patient and relaxed when working with your pendulum.
If you are not in the right mindframe you may not interpret the answer from your pendulum correctly and some believe you can be more vulnerable to negative influences and energies. You may also want to sit at a table or other surface you can rest your arm somewhere as it may begin to ache, or you can also just use your other arm to support your pendulum arm.
You should also approach your pendulum in a respectful way and may want to begin by asking ‘light, easy’ questions such as ‘is now a good time for me to use my pendulum’ or ‘do you mind if I call you [name]’.
“Make your mind ready. Free yourself of internal and external noise. Clear your mind of worries. Do not multi-task. Relax and focus. Quiet, non-lyrical music (music without words) may help, along with other meditational aids like candles, incense, and crystals – but these things are not required and you can, use your pendulum anywhere, at any time, with or without these extra items.”https://askyourpendulum.com/pages/how-to-use-a-pendulum (Ask Your Pendulum, 2019)
You can ask your questions out loud or you can say them inside your head, your questions will be heard however you ask them. You may also need to be patient when waiting for your answer as you may not get one instantly, sometimes a pendulum takes more time to start moving. It’s also recommended that you try to remain ‘detached’ from the answer and not ‘will’ a specific answer from your pendulum as this may affect the result.
If you don’t get an answer, or don’t get a clear response, it may not be the right time for you to be working with your pendulum and you could try rephrasing the question, asking a simpler question or try asking the question another time. You can also ask your pendulum to respond ‘louder’ or to ‘clearer’ in it’s responses. Some people choose to hold their pendulum over the palm of their other hand to help focus their energy and get clearer responses.
It’s also best to avoid asking for opinions or using the words ‘should’ or ‘supposed to’ in your questions. It’s also believed that if your pendulum swings with ‘great force’ it’s answering your question ‘loudly’ and that if your pendulum swings with ‘light force’ this may be interpreted as a ‘quiet, perhaps less committed response’
Some recommend ‘clearing’ a pendulum after each question by ‘ touching its weight-stone to the palm of your free hand or on another surface’ to signal that your questions have been answered and you are ready to move on to the next question.
When you are finished working with your pendulum it is best to ‘close’ the session, I say ‘thank you’ and ‘goodbye’ to close a session.
It’s sometimes recommended that you protect your pendulum when it’s not in use and keep it somewhere safe, but you can also keep it on, in a pouch to keep it safe, or you could wear it around your neck to help it ‘receive your energy’, ‘attune’ it to your ‘energy’ and ‘vibration’ and connect with your pendulum.
